Throughout the 1980’s, Bart Smith handled row placement fertilizer, custom planting, and sold chemicals and seed. In 1988 Bart started Smith Agri-Services Inc. out of a scrap metal building and an old semi-trailer for housing seed. His office was an old abandoned scale shack, two-and-half miles west of Barry, Illinois. For the first few years Bart sprayed every acre himself. He tended the chemicals in a 1000gal trailer, which he pulled behind his pick-up sprayer with manual fold out booms. In planting season, Bart would work all day and then continue to load out seed from 9:00pm until the tiresome hours of the morning.

Over the years employees were added and Bart’s wife, Jane, left her job as an RN to help with booking and internal obligations. In 1999 Bart’s son, Conrad Smith, came to work full-time as a custom applicator for Smith Ag. In 2003 Conrad became their salesman for chemicals, seed, and fertilizer. Over the past decade Smith Ag. has added salesmen and built partnerships from Missouri to Ohio.
